Building Future Leadership

This program offers attendees a tremendous opportunity to continue their path of success and become more involved as current and future leaders of the construction industry in Iowa. It introduces participants to MBI, while focusing on communication and stepping outside of your comfort zone. The class also takes on a project that will have a positive impact on Iowa’s commercial construction industry.

MB EYE on the Future is the only program that MBI offers that has an application process, which requires an employer recommendation and selection procedure. Participants are nominated by their company’s executive management and complete an application for consideration in the program. Careful consideration of all nominations and applications is then made by a selection committee.

If a company is looking to grow great, enthusiastic and confident leaders, MB EYE on the Future is a ‘must’ class to have. The class will do wonders for an employee’s confidence. Ken does an excellent job of developing people into confident employees with his teaching of this class. It is worth the time and money for the future of your company to send employees through this class. - Kevin Larsen, Woodruff Construction, LLC

A main component of the MB EYE on the Future program is the ‘The Leaders Course’® presented by Ken Bradford of Dallas, Texas. Ken works with the class the first five months of the program, boosting their confidence, communication and leadership skills, as well as leading each participant to become a more effective and charismatic leader. Ken’s sessions are not about taking notes, listening to lectures or watching lengthy slide presentations. Ken focuses on learning by doing, by participating, taking risks, and applying the materials he teaches on a daily basis.

Nominations for the 2019-2020 class are due by close of business on May 24th, 2019. Please contact Micah Loveless at mloveless@mbi.build with any questions.

The Leadership Experience

  • Overview
  • Details
  • Roster

Overview

The Leadership Experience is a leadership training program that addresses the critical areas of communication, collaboration, culture and customer. These four areas are critical in all levels of leadership and attendees are challenged to take the learning of previous leadership classes to the next, higher level. Becoming an effective leader requires an understanding of people, personalities, attitudes, goals and more. The Leadership Experience stresses to attendees that the most important person they will ever lead is themselves.

The MBI Leadership Experience was a superb course of self- reflection and deeper learning.  Rather than starting at square one, the MBI Leadership Experience took advantage of the prior leadership experience of the attendees. The result was an effective series which not only challenged the attendees to utilize what they likely already knew, but also to reconsider leadership principles from a different view. The interaction between peers was invaluable as a learning tool, facilitating the ability to focus on items that mean the most to our industry, and gain familiarity with each other in a non- competitive environment. David Rabiner challenged the group to be real. At all times, he remained connected with us. The humility and group awareness David demonstrated kept the class in learning mode, not lecture mode. More specifically, David spoke with us, not at us. I told David on our last evening that he really drove home learning in a way that the construction industry could relate to, but in hindsight, I can't think of anyone who wouldn't want to learn in that way. -Dan Kartman, Seedorff Masonry

In addition to the classroom training, attendees receive one-on-one executive leadership coaching from our facilitator. Becoming a great construction leader does not boil down to what you know technically, nor is it about who you know. It is about…you: your character; your ability to lead yourself and others; your influence in good times and bad; and your individual career journey. This program changes individuals on multiple levels as leaders in their company, home and community.

The brochure and registration information for The Leadership Experience 2019-20 will be available this summer.  For additional information about this program, please contact Tom Fulcher at tfulcher@mbi.build

Foundations of a Field Leader

Overview

Laying the Groundwork for Effective Field Leadership

This field leadership development program is designed to provide attendees with a host of tools and information to help them excel as leaders in the areas of Leadership, Risk Management, Communication, and Personal Effectiveness.  Leading a team, crew, or group of individuals in a commercial construction project environment takes an exceptional person with the right skill set and personality, along with construction knowledge and awareness.  Leaders in the field must be able to manage time, equipment, materials, and most importantly, people. This program will provide the tools and help develop the skills of attendees in becoming successful leaders.

As a new project superintendent, I have found the classes for Foundations of a Field Leader very helpful in my day to day operations on the job. With a whole day on communication, which I feel is key on any job, it was a very instructional course. For contractors who feel they have an up and coming lead person, I highly recommend this course before they are in that position. - Richard Firmstone, Neumann Brothers, Inc.

The audience for this program are individuals who show promise as a potential field leader, or those who are currently in a leadership role and would like to improve in the areas of leadership, risk management, communication and personal skills, such as time management, prioritizing, and goal setting.

Overview

Project Managers and Project Supervisors - A High Performing Leadership Series is a program that creates an environment designed to focus on leadership and teamwork between two critical positions within a construction team. The manager and supervisor need to be on the same page when it comes to staffing, scheduling, communicating, budgeting, change orders and so on, and this program helps these leaders understand themselves, and each other.

“A great all-around learning experience. My favorite part was all the presenters did a great job of keeping it interesting and informal.” - Len Reid, Hy-Vee Construction, LC

Items addressed in this program are viewed from the perspective of the project manager and the project supervisor to assure a high level of understanding. This exciting series combines the experiences and knowledge of project managers, project supervisors and presenters, focusing on team building workshops to address common construction roadblocks to effectiveness.

The brochure and registration information for the 2020 Project Managers and Supervisor…A High Performing Leadership Series will be available this summer. For additional information about this program, please contact Tom Fulcher at tfulcher@mbi.build

Overview

Successfully implement BIM on your construction projects

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is changing the way projects are constructed. Whether you are a prime contractor using BIM across an entire project or a subcontractor impacted by a specific BIM implementation, this emerging practice requires new mindsets and technological know-how in order to achieve significant improvements in efficiency and cost control. The highly interactive AGC BIM Education Program course provides 32-hours of instruction and training to get construction industry professionals at all levels ready to take advantage of the benefits of BIM. The CM-BIM is the construction industry’s only credential that teaches the practical application of the Building Information Modeling process for commercial construction firms.

Following successful completion of the entire four-unit program, attendees are eligible to sit for the AGC of America Certificate of Management—Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM) exam. This exam is offered at Master Builders of Iowa in Des Moines.

CM BIM Exam

The AGC Certificate of Management-Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM) is an assessment-based certificate credential that denotes knowledge and understanding of concepts related to BIM adoption, practice and process transformation outlined in the AGC BIM Education Program (BIMEP). Successful candidates will carry the CM-BIM designation.

Exam Eligibility Requirements

CM-BIM candidates must successfully complete the four BIM Education Program courses, provide AGC with a record of completion and have an approved application in advance of exam administration.

Exam Fees

All fees total $575 and will be collected at one time after the candidate application is reviewed and approved. These fees are paid to AGC of America.

If you have completed the BIM Education Program and would like to take the CM-BIM exam, please contact Tom Fulcher at tfulcher@mbi.build to schedule your exam date.

Overview

Become a Lean Construction Champion

Everyone related to the construction process has the incentive to get the project done faster and at a lower cost - from the project owners who want to see tangible results for their investment to the contractors and designers who want to do their job well and move on to the next project. Lean Construction is based on the holistic pursuit of continuous improvements aimed at minimizing costs and maximizing value on a construction project: planning, design, construction, activation, operations, maintenance, salvaging, and recycling.

The AGC Lean Construction Education Program (LCEP) is the curriculum available to help you reach these goals. The LCEP consists of seven units that instruct all aspects of Lean, allowing practitioners to benefit from these principles. Construction professionals at all experience levels will learn the building blocks necessary to transform their projects and companies into a Lean operating system. In addition, this course provides tools to help participants recognize sources of variation on their own projects, examine variation’s effect on operations, and mitigate the effects of variation in their every-day work.

To help contractors develop the knowledge needed to build lean, Master Builders of Iowa is offering the Associated General Contractors of America Lean Construction Education Program.

Following successful completion of the entire 7 unit program, attendees are eligible to sit for the AGC of America CM-Lean exam at Master Builders of Iowa in Des Moines.

The AGC Certificate of Management-Lean Construction (CM-Lean) is an assessment-based certificate credential that denotes knowledge and understanding of concepts related to lean adoption, practice and process transformation outlined in AGC’s Lean Construction Education Program (LCEP).  Successful candidates will carry the CM-Lean designation.

CM Lean Exam

CM-Lean candidates must successfully complete the seven Lean Construction Education Program courses, provide AGC with a record of completion and have an approved application in advance of exam administration.

Exam Fees

All fees total $575 and will be collected at one time after the candidate application is reviewed and approved. This includes a $150 application and technology fee and $425 exam fee.  These fees are paid to AGC of America.

AGC CM-Lean Application

Your application will be reviewed against the national database of Lean Construction Education Program course completers. The application should not be submitted until you have completed all seven units of LCEP. Please allow five (5) business days once this form is submitted for it to be reviewed and approved.
